I grew up in New Jersey, the only other state in which you still don’t have to pump your own gas. It’s glorious! My town was right on the border with Pennsylvania, so I dutifully learned how to do it myself, but I always made the effort to get gas in NJ because it’s so much better. The issues you mention about accessibility and safety are too often overlooked, and the state keeps jobs that continue to disappear in other industries. It’s a WIN-WIN.
